Not long ago I had to make a (Power Point)
presentation for Dutch class about my dead idol. Why dead? Because we were
learning things about death and the way they are seen in life and the media,
things like that. We had to talk a bit about the person, what he/she did and
most importantly talk about why you chose this person; why he/she connects to
you, speaks to you. When I heard about this task, the first thing that immediately
came to mind was no other than Walt Disney himself!
He is my idol and happens
to be dead. Convenient, right? And another thing that’s quite convenient is the
fact that he was American. Therefore I’m allowed to talk about him for my
English blog post.
Anyway, I’m going to write a longer version of what I
talked about in class. First things first; Walter Elias Disney was born on the
fifth of December, 1901. This man was known for a lot things such as: film
producer, film director and voice actor. Yes, he was the voice of his famous
character Mickey Mouse himself! Most importantly, he was a famous animator and
a very successful entertainer. Which over the course of his years turned him
into an international icon. Walt Disney was also known to be a very peaceful
and loving man. Walt died on the 15th December, 1966 of lung cancer.
Now that I’ve told you a bit of back-story on this
wonderful man, I will tell you as to why exactly I choose him to be my idol.
First of all, I absolutely love all the work/animation he and the company that
he started has made. Everything from the oldest little cartoons to the big
screen movies. With those cartoons and movies obviously comes the characters.
That’s another reason why Walt Disney is my idol; Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald
Duck, Pluto, all those amazing characters. Ever since I was little, I was
surrounded by things with Mickey Mouse on them. I grew up with Mickey Mouse and
I’m not surprised the character became the most recognized fictional character
on the planet. Another reason, maybe not directly connected to Walt Disney, is
Pixar. I adore all the movies Pixar has made during the past years; from Toy
Story to their new upcoming movie Brave. They’re rich in character, color,
atmosphere, emotions, story and all the things you need for a good family
movie. And yes, I will admit I cried a little in the end of Toy Story 3.
A bit more personal reason is that Disney was a philanthropist (as I said before, he was a peaceful, loving man), an optimist and a dreamer. I like to think of myself that I possess the same attributes as he does. What do I mean by dreamer? As you can see, he’s a man with a very vast fantasy and lived to fulfill his dreams (see picture at bottom).

Well, that was my idol, it was a lot of fun writing
this blog.
“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”
